CURIOUS NEIGHBOURS

31. CURIOUS NEIGHBOURS

Hark! A door doth loudly slam

Through it now the wild hordes cram

Sulky girls and boy-like beasts

Primal chaos now unleashed

Battle roars with dull play-swords

Bats and balls and offside calls

Playground czars with piercing shrieks

Scraps and spars with tears on cheeks

 Yet o’er yon wall

Lies a world in peace

Childhood’s end

Where play has ceased

Here paths are marred

And gates are barred

Stone is cold

All innings closed

Now mark my friend, if time you’ll take

What curious neighbours these do make.
